Aucklanders have voiced their support of smoking ban in open spaces, such as footpaths, civic squares and beaches.
Auckland Council already has the country’s most comprehensive smoke-free policy.
However, its regional strategy and policy committee has now decided to further investigate the bylaw, making smoking in designated open spaces in Auckland illegal and aligning with the Government’s goal of New Zealand becoming a smoke-free nation by 2025.
Mayor Len Brown has backed the call, saying it fits with the council's vision to be the world's most liveable city.
Te Waha Nui hit the streets to ask Aucklanders whether they support smoking ban in open spaces.
While most of them liked the idea, a few felt it was too much regulation.
