Students to strike again on Friday

Thousands of students are set to miss school on Friday to protest the health of the planet.

Student co-ordinators of the New Zealand School Strike 4 Climate have planned 25 events nationwide in a bid to get the Government’s attention.

Luke Wijohn, a student co-ordinator from Western Springs College, said students were disappointed with the Government's "weak" Zero Carbon Bill.

"We want the Government to declare a climate crisis. We demand the end to fossil fuel, to keep the global temperature to no more than 1.5C, to transition to a green sustainable economy."

Auckland students have planned a 'lie-in' on Queen St – where they will lie down on the road – at midday.

Mr Wijohn said co-ordinators had been working with police to try and guarantee the safety of the students taking part.

"I've been in contact with the police, and we've been through various meetings together because student safety is our main priority for a successful lie-in."

Mr Wijohn said the second strike would be different than the previous one on March 15.

"With the last strike, it was overshadowed due to the attack in Christchurch, and rightly so. But that meant we didn't have the impact we were after," Mr Wijohn said.

Other organised events around the country include tree planting, beach clean-ups and march protests.

Mr Wijohn said students would not give up until the Government listened.

"We need to make this more than just a protest, make it a movement and make things change.

"We are going to keep rising up until [the Government] wake up," he said.
