Auckland's Central City Library will hold several events in the coming week to celebrate National Poetry Day.

Running all of this week is an interactive stuck-up word art installation that lets people rearrange words to create their own unique poem.

The installation is a way of getting people involved in creating poetry of their own, says Sean Taylor, who is in charge of library activation at the city library.

“Stuck-up word art is essentially similar to fridge-magnet poetry. It's about being able to rearrange the words to how you like to create poetry of your own. We wanted to do it in a giant format.

“I think libraries are a place where I think people should feel inspired and creative and kind of get access to all the various kinds of literature that's out there.

“So if you can come into the library and you feel like you can create poetry, that's what libraries are about.”

Shonby Ikimouga, a security officer at the library, was a keen participant in the installation and created a poem of his own.

“[My poem] is about human beings. It’s about love and what is in your heart.”

Mr Ikimouga says the stuck-up word art installation is a great way for getting people involved in poetry and being creative.

“With National Poetry Day coming up, we want to promote various forms of poetry whether it's your ability to create and craft something or whether it's professional poets or people who just want to express themselves in different ways,” says Mr Taylor.

Other events held on or leading up to National Poetry Day on Friday, August 25, at central city library include pop-up poetry, poetry workshops and Auckland Speaks.

More information about National Poetry Day events at Auckland central city library can be found on the Auckland libraries website.
