A good mate makes all the difference for some disabled people being able to enjoy events - and with mutual benefits, says a fun Auckland project seeking volunteers.

Gig Buddies Auckland, aimed at combating social isolation among disabled people, joins people up to connect monthly, based on their mutual interests in music, sport or hobbies.

Gig Buddies Project lead Hans Matig-a  says despite the desire to socialise, it is not as simple for disabled people to get out to events.

“Even if the event is physically accessible, many people lack the confidence to go alone or may feel awkward relying on a parent or support worker for company.”

While Gig Buddies volunteers receive training and ongoing support, they are not paid support workers as the aim is to form real connections so volunteers willingly enjoy providing companionship.

Gig Buddies recently hosted a music event in collaboration with Auckland Council, designed for accessibility and inclusivity, catering to the diverse needs of all participants.

Volunteer applications are currently open with people encouraged to join to make a positive impact in the community through the project which is funded by Spectrum Foundation.

And there are uniques benefits for participants and volunteers, says Fenella Humphreys, the foundation's director of philanthropy.

“A lot of young people find it difficult to expand their social circles and make new friends, socially after Covid.”

With social isolation and anxiety being a common challenge, Gig Buddies provides a simple way for people to contribute and to socialise at the same time, she said.

Those interested in becoming involved or learning more about Gig Buddies should visit Spectrum Care and Gig Buddies Auckland website.
