Classics to be sold off in prestigious auction

A lavish car auction will take place in Auckland this month, with impressive classics set to take centre stage.

The auction, which will feature 13 vintage cars and nine motorcycles, is expected to hit six figures when the vehicles go under the hammer.

For one owner, at least, the car parting will be one of sweet sorrow.

Richard Williams, whose wife is selling her 1965 Mk II Jaguar, said via email, they would be sad to see the car go.

“We’ve had the car for 18 years now, my wife was English and I think she bought it as  a memento to remind her of home.

“We want the car to stay in New Zealand, as it was New Zealand new.”

Mr Williams hoped the buyer would tend it lovingly. “I hope it reaches safe hands and the next owner will be its guardian, to look after it and maintain it, just as we have since it was bought.

“We just don’t have the time to drive it anymore, and that’s what cars are for, to be driven.”

The reason for selling the car at the lavish auction was because it would attract the type of people who would pay more money, Mr Williams said.

The cars in the auction will be viewed by overseas buyers who wouldn’t otherwise see the vehicles.

High-end auction house Mossgreen-Webb is hosting the sale. Spokesman Robert Richards said the total pre-sale auction estimate was around $1.7-1.9 million.

Mossgreen-Webb’s first New Zealand car auction was in Wellington in December, which included a Mk II Jaguar from 1966 which ended up going for well above its estimate of $52,000.

Unfortunately for Mr Williams and his beloved Mk II, Mr Richards believed most of the cars will end up overseas as this is where they originate.

“Most cars within this sale have an international market, given they are American and European marques.”

The auction is being held in the aviation display hall at MOTAT on June 18, starting at 3pm. Viewings will be held from 10am-5pm on June 16 and 17, and from 10am-1pm on June 18.
