Cupcake Day is a nationwide fundraising day aimed at raising money for the SPCA.
AUT Student Movement (AuSM) hosted the stall on campus, starting with more than 200 cupcakes for $2 each, and more than half were already sold by midday.
“We’re giving back for animal cruelty and every dollar counts,” said stall co-ordinator Romulus Swanney.
This was the fourth year AuSM have fundraised for SPCA and volunteers are encouraged to bake their own cupcakes.
“Just seeing students make cupcakes themselves and bring them in means a lot,” said Mr Swanney.
“We don’t really have a target. We just aim to do the best we can.”
Every semester AuSM fundraise for different charities depending on what events are on.
Stall volunteer Jordan Miller said he likes the work the SPCA do.
“Whenever I want to get a pet I usually go to SPCA to have a look,” said Mr Miller.
“Being at university I wanted it to be about more than just studying. I wanted to give back to the community.”
All proceeds raised on Cupcake Day go towards helping sick, abandoned, injured and abused animals.
Fundraisers were held throughout the country, including Canterbury, Hokitika, Rotorua, Wellington and Turangi.
