AUT students studying on campus on Tuesday were frustrated by a wi-fi outage across parts of all three campuses from mid-morning until early evening.

The students were unable to access the network, having to choose between using their own mobile data to continue studying on campus, or to leave campus and study at home.

Fourth-year Bachelor of Law student Jess Li was concerned about how much using her mobile data would cost.

“If the wi-fi isn’t going to work, then I’m going home because there’s no point staying on campus,” she said.

Bachelor of Communications student Geordie Humby said it interrupted her school day.

“It’s just frustrating when you’re in the middle of doing your assignments […] You just want to do your work.”

Both students expressed frustration with other small wi-fi glitches interrupting their day.

“It takes up unnecessary time to try and get back onto the wi-fi,” Geordie said.

“[It] cuts your focus a little bit when you’re in the zone […] It’s just not there anymore,” said Jess.

AUT communications director Alison Sykora said in a statement there was indeed a wi-fi disruption at AUT which affected certain areas on all campuses..

"Service was restored at 6.11pm and the wired network remained unaffected.

“Following investigation, the issue was identified as a software bug. Our ICT team has worked closely with our partner, Cisco, to resolve the problem.”
